Call the school at (510) 879-1270 or email the attendance specialist at Antoinette.grogans@ousd.org.
Absences are excused for illness, medical appointments, family emergencies, and religious observances.
Tardies
Students arriving after 8:35 must check in at the office to receive a late pass.
Independent Studies
For absences of 1 to 15 days, you can request an independent study plan by emailing your child’s teacher and Antoinette.grogans@ousd.org. Please request independent studies at least 5 days in advance so we have time to prepare materials.
Note that we cannot do independent studies for more than 15 days in the school year. After that, absences will be coded as unexcused. For families who want longer independent studies, consider Sojourner Truth online school. For students with medical emergencies, Home and Hospital may be a better option.
Independent studies can be used for non-consecutive absences (ex: three days of absence in October and five days in March) up to 15 total days.
Children must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Do not send students with contagious symptoms.
Masks are not required but are encouraged for students with active coughs.
If a student is absent for more than three days due to illness we ask that you please provide a doctor's note for our school records. When a student reaches 14 absences in the school year for illness (even if they are not consecutive), additional absences for illness thereafter will require a doctor's note or will be considered unexcused.
Medications
Families need to fill out an authorization for medication form and bring in their child’s medication to be kept locked in the office
Communicate with our school nurse, Julie.macon@ousd.org around any medication questions.
Immunizations
California law requires proof of immunization for all students.
Immunization records can be dropped off with Wayne Berreman in the main office before school begins in August. Wayne and Julie will add your child’s immunizations to Aeries.
School Nurse
Hillcrest’s school nurse, Julie Macon, is on site one day a week and can be contacted at julie.macon@ousd.org
Julie supports with medical management for students with chronic health conditions, immunization records, and vision and hearing screening. She also coordinates health education for teachers going on field trips or teachers who manage student health conditions in the classroom.
Please keep your Aeries Portal information up to date so we can easily contact you in case of emergency. Contract antoinette.grogans@ousd.org if any contacts need to be updated.
Emergency Preparedness
Monthly drills are held for fire, earthquake, lock down and shelter in place so students can practice our procedures.
You can find our emergency summary procedures here.
Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) runs the after school child care program. More information, including Registration can be found on their website. Please direct questions to Carlos Castro.
